An early-blooming variety producing large, red peony form double flowers.  With a moderate growth rate, and erect habit, it has a somewhat coarse texture.  "Great Sacred Dance" (trans.) is a well-known cultivar dating back to 1788.   It has proven to be highly variable, and named mutant forms have originated from it.

Hardy to USDA Zone 7A
